Converting Forest

Residues into Fuel Value

From Forest Floor to Furnace Fuel

Charles Hull Contracting secured major contracts to clean up forest residues generated during large-scale land clearing for bauxite mining operations in Western Australia. Rather than treating the biomass as a disposal problem, Charles Hull saw an opportunity and partnered with Mineral Processing Solutions to make it a reality. With a CBI 6400CT Wood Chipper deployed on site, what was once waste material became a consistent, high-quality wood chip fuel product feeding directly into bauxite refining furnaces.

Overview

Challenge

Hard Material, High Volumes, No Room for Waste

Bauxite mining generates significant volumes of difficult material including hardwood timber, stumps, root balls, and mixed green waste. Disposing of it was costly, burning it was increasingly restricted, and leaving it in bulky stockpiles created handling inefficiencies and missed commercial opportunity. Charles Hull needed a heavy-duty, high-capacity solution that could process tough, variable material and produce a consistent fuel-grade output at scale, reliably, in harsh Australian conditions.

Solution

CBI 6400CT Wood Chipper

Mineral Processing Solutions supplied a CBI 6400CT Wood Chipper, a high-production machine built for exactly this kind of demanding, large-scale application. Powered by a CAT C27 engine producing up to 1050HP and fitted with a 60-inch rotor, the unit is capable of processing up to 200 tonnes per hour. Its tracked undercarriage allowed it to move across difficult terrain, keeping production close to the source and eliminating unnecessary double handling. Residues were fed continuously through the chipper, producing uniform biomass chips ready for transport directly to bauxite refining facilities.

RESULTS

A Disposal Problem Turned Profit Centre

The impact was immediate and commercial. Forest residues that would have cost money to remove were converted into a marketable fuel product, sold back into the bauxite mining supply chain as a renewable furnace fuel, creating a new sustainable income stream for Charles Hull. High throughput cleared backlogs quickly, improved project turnaround times, and reduced the carbon footprint of the operation by displacing fossil fuels. The CBI 6400CT delivered strong uptime with minimal interruption, performing consistently in tough Australian conditions and returning value from day one.
